Water filtration FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What's the difference between whole-home water softening and filtration?

The water softening process removes the calcium and magnesium that cause hard water through an ion exchange process. Water filtration addresses quality issues related to its cleanness, tastes and odours, from potential contaminants such as lead, mercury, arsenic, bacteria that cause health concerns, to chlorine, chloramine, rust and much more, which may affect its taste or odours.

2. How does water softener work?

Water softeners contain negatively charged resin beads that are designed to attract positively charged ions like calcium and magnesium, which are the dissolved minerals responsible for hard water. Through the ion exchange process, the hardness ions are attached to the resin beads and are then removed from the water, resulting in softened water.

3. What impact does hard water have on me?

Hard water contains a high concentration of calcium and magnesium. That can cause scale buildups in pipes, soap scum on fixtures, cloudy glassware, spotty dishes, dry skin, split hair and hair loss, stiff and scratchy laundries, speedy wear and tear of water-using appliances, and more.

4. What else would a water softener benefit me apart from the skin and hair benefits?

A water softener can also save you big on your expenditures spent on cleaning agents like soap, shampoo, detergent, jet-dry, etc. The cleaning products work more efficiently in soft water. The hard water does not make it lather well, hence the decrease in cleaning power. Also, by using the water softener, you can save energy when doing laundry or using the water heater. In addition, it prolongs the life of your water-using appliances and causes fewer repairs and replacements.

5. What are the signs of hard water?

Signs of hard water include spots on glasses, scale buildup on faucets and showerheads, dry hair, dry or irritated skin, soap scum on shower doors, dingy or stuff laundry, and problems with water-using appliances.

6. How would I know if I need to test my water or get it treated?

If your water smells bad or tastes bad, and you are experiencing cloudy glassware, hard-to-clean spots or surfaces, you are seeing spots, stains or buildups on the faucet, shower head, you should get your water tested by an expert for your health. The majority of cities or GTA have hard water issues, and the northern it gets, the harder the water is. You are not an exception.

7. Does a whole-home filtration system benefit my skin and hair?

Yes. Chlorine /Chloramine is largely used in all municipal sources of water to sanitize and disinfect the bacteria and germs found in the water source that cause harmfulness to human body. That's also a main cause of dry skin and hair. Ultrefina's whole home water filtration system will deliver you chemical-free water at every tap in your home.

8. Why is it better to shower with filtered and or softened water ?

The chemicals in the municipal water causes dry skin and hair loss. Taking a 30 min shower is like drinking 2 liters of chlorinated hard water. That's why bathing with filtered or softened water does benefit a lot to your health.

9. Do I need both a softener / whole-home filtration system as well as the RO system?

Yes, highly recommended. Whole-home filtration takes care of you from everything external as you can see including your body, the appliances, fixtures, piping and etc. while the drinking system takes care of you from within to deliver you better healthier and tastier water to boost your immune system.

10. Are all the whole-home filtration system universal to all homes?

Technically no, we customize the right size and capacity of the whole-home filtration system for you based on your family size, water consumption level and habit, total water usage point of your home to determine the right one for your own needs.

11. What maintenance is required for your water softeners and filtration systems?

Water softener requires the adding 2 bags of softener salt every 4-6 months depending on your household water consumption and area water hardness, other than that, a replacement of the resin beads in the tank may be necessary every 10-15 years. For whole-home filtration system, the activated carbon and other filtration contents may require an replacement every 3-4 years depending on the models you chose with us.

12. Do you also offer filtration products for private well water?

Currently we offer the well water products on project-to-project basis and that requires a ordering time of roughly 1-3 months depending on what products you are going to get. Reason being that the underground well water source varies a lot depending on the area that you are in. Bacteria, germs, sulfur, iron level are always different. We wanna make sure to get you a complete and issue-fixed solution instead of random trying. In general, a UV sanitizer is a must to have, iron/sulfur remover is mostly required and a softener as well.
